Dali Ancient City is 13 kilometers (8.1 miles) away from Xiaguan in Dali City, Yunnan Province and is one of the 'Three Ancients' (Ancient Cities, Ancient Pagodas and Ancient Steles) of the Dali Scenic Spot. It can be dated back to the year 1382 during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and has been among the top listed historical cities of China since 1982. With Erhai Lake to the east, and Cangshan Mountain to the west, its grand city wall, traditional Bai ethnic minority folk houses and marvelous scenery have been attracting many visitors.

According to literature, this Ancient City was a gateway to the Silk Road in Southwest China, and also served as a seat of government and a major military barracks for Yunnan Province in ancient times. It enjoyed magnificent scale, with a wall length of 6 kilometers (3.73 miles), a height of 7.5 meters (24.6 feet) and a thickness of 6 meters (19.7 feet). There were four city gates facing west, east, north and south, upon which sat a gate tower. Four further towers were also placed at the four corners of the city wall. As it underwent many phases of prosperity as well as decline, only the city base remains till today. We can explore the mystery belonging to that period of history, especially through witnessing some parts of the city wall, the North City Wall Tower and the South City Wall Tower which were restored in 1982. The city layout was uniform, with five main streets from south to north and eight main streets from east to west, while marketplaces were neatly arranged within the city, which has remained unchanged to this date.

DANDONG, China — President Donald Trump's war of words with North Korea may have cooled in recent days, but that hasn’t stopped Chinese tourists from jostling with one another to catch a glimpse at the reclusive country through the telescopes mounted on Broken Bridge.

Rarely has North Korea ever been considered as much of a threat as it is today. The nuclear weapons ambitions of its dictator, Kim Jong Un, have ramped tension to an unsettling high and raised the specter of actual war.

North Korea has long been considered a pariah state by much of the world, yet for China, it remains a trading partner and a historically close Communist ally.

While tourists consider Dandong a window to another world, as a trading hub it is North Korea’s lifeline. More than two-thirds of China’s trade with the regime passes through here along the single-lane Friendship Bridge that connects the two sides.

Upstream, there is a new $325 million multi-lane bridge that China completed in 2014, but it has collected dust because North Korea never built a road to meet it. Around the bridge, the residential towers and streets of "Dandong New Area" are nearly empty, testament to the expected boom in cross-border business that did not happen.

For over a decade, trade restrictions have been slapped on North Korea to attempt to dull the regime’s nuclear weapons ambitions. For the most part, sanctions have not significantly slowed trade between the countries.

As one of the twenty-four famous historical cities in China, Datong is known for its abundant historical relics and natural beauty. Unlike the pretty and elegant scene in cities south of China, sceneries here boast the air of majesty and grandeur. Datong was originally the capital of Northern Wei (386~534) and the 'support capital' of Liao (916~1125) and Jin (1115~1234). Northern Wei is a stage during which Buddhism developed quite rapidly in China. In the later Liao and Jin, the belief in Buddhism also increased to a high level. Therefore, as the country's political and economic center, many temples, pagodas and other buildings related to Buddhism were set up during these periods in Datong.
